The Port Arthur Web Census

We measured the website of every independent business we could find across Port Arthur, Nederland, Groves, Port Neches and Beaumont: whether it has a site at all, whether that site is secure, and how long it actually takes to load on a phone.

What we found

Of the 1150 independent businesses in scope, 422 (37%) have no website listed at all. Another 58 list a website whose server gave no response at all.

Among the 728 businesses that do have a site, 86 are still not served over HTTPS, which means most browsers mark them “Not secure” to every visitor. The median performance score across the 557 sites we could measure is 59 out of 100.

Median largest-contentful-paint on a mobile connection is 8.7 seconds. Google treats 2.5 seconds as the threshold for a good experience; 3% of the local sites we could measure meet it.

Why this exists

Nobody publishes this. You can find out how one business is doing online in about thirty seconds, but nobody has ever counted the whole metro at once, and so nothing is ever said about it with numbers attached.

The dataset is free to download and free to cite. If you write about Southeast Texas, run a chamber of commerce, or are just curious how your street compares, take it. The method is documented so you can check the work or repeat it.
